Lake drawdowns have several benefits:
-
Kill invasive aquatic plants that grow in shallow water.
-
Prevent ice damage.
-
Allow shoreline access for repairing retaining walls, docks, and general debris clean up.
-
Regulate flow and water storage, which helps in the management of downstream flooding.
-
Improve the habitat for fish.
-
Protect the shoreline from winter erosion.
-
Limit ice damage to docks and loading ramps.
-
Allow homeowners on the lakefront to clean up debris, cut invasive phragmites, make repairs to walls and docks, and begin new construction projects.
The drawdown is targeted in the littoral zone as noted below in this illustration. This will kill any weeds growing in this area with the proper temperatures for freezing in the winter.
